Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET) is a blend of procedures from Western and Eastern medicine. The system clams to eliminate allergies for good. Most noteworthy is the process is non invasive and drug free. The main components include chiropractic and Chinese medicine.

Focuses of NAET

  • Nutrition
  • Accupressure
  • Accupuncture
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Kinesiology
  • Allopathy
  • Energy balancing

Who created Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique?

The NAET process was created by Dr. Devi Nambudripad, according to the NAET website. She is a Chiropractor and Doctor of Oriental Medicine, LAc, RN, PhD.

Doctor Nambudripad has written a book, Say Goodbye to Illness. She tells her story of growing up with many health problems including chronic fatigue and asthma. Due to these problems, she points out that medications never gave her any relief. This was the genesis for her to create the NAET process.

As a result, Dr. Nambudripad a California native, created the technique in 1983. Thousands of patients are said to have been treated and are now allergy free.

How does NAET diagnose allergies?

Muscle response testing is used to diagnose if you have an allergy. The process is referred to as neuromuscular sensitivity testing (NST). For that reason, muscle weaknesses are assessed to determines if allergens exist.

Pinched nerves are claimed to cause disturbances in energy flow. Hence, energy flow breaks are blamed for causing disease. They blame an allergy as the cause of these pinched nerves.

If you are diagnosed with a moderate amount of allergies, you could be in the office repeatedly. Each individual allergy will need to be eliminated, which could result in 10-20 office visits.

That would be a lot of copays, which add up over time. My goal is to save you money and avoiding costly office visists is a key takeaway.

How does it work?

The idea behind NAET is that the immune system becomes weakened by multiple allergic reactions. The immune system starts to fight off our own body through the allergic process which causes allergy symptoms Resources the immune system requires to keep us healthy are depleted as a consequence. This allows other diseases to attack the body while the immune response is not at full capacity.

A key component of NAET is having energy balanced in the body. Therefore, NAET practitioners would try to get the body back into homeostasis. Too much energy focused on the allergy is almost the entire problem according to NAET. They claim the idea comes from a Chinese Medicine principle that “no disease is possible when your body is in perfect balance”.

Homeostatis is defined as the “tendency toward a stable equilibrium between interdependent elements”. This is important to keep in mind since allergic response is a natural part of out immune systems. The fact that many people have symptoms from allergies doesn’t mean that the allergic response is not important to our overall health and immune function.

What would a treatment consist of?

Treatment may include spinal manipulation, acupressure or acupuncture. Stimulating spinal nerves to change body energy is the goal of treatment.

The idea is that an allergen can weaken a muscle or causing a blockage in energy flow.

  • Spinal manipulation- to relieve a pinched nerve
  • Accupressure- to remove energy blockades
  • Acupuncture- at certain acupuncture points to allow energy to flow

Diet

Digestion problems are due to food allegories according to NAET. They want to clear the allergy to your foods.

Avoiding foods that cause allergies and adding nutrients to the diet are promoted by NAET. The nutrients are typically in the form of supplements. Many time the doses of supplements can be very large. As a result, NAET claims to be able to treat you for chemicals, environmental allergens and vaccines.

What allergies does NAET claim to eliminate?

The NAET website claims to be able to treat the allergies in the table below. Please consult your doctor before thinking that you will cure any allergy with the NAET process. It could be very dangerous to assume you can use these products after NAET treatments if you have a severe allergy.

There is a disclaimer on the website that notes they do not claim to cure allergies. Please keep this in mind when investigating Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique.

Reality Check

NAET treatment side effects

Side effects of NAET are not readily available. Clinical trials have not been done to study NAET’s effects or safety profile. Therefore, side effect data would have to come from the practices used in NAET.

Potential side effects of spinal manipulation

  • Headache
  • Stiffness
  • Local discomfort

Potential side effects of acupuncture

  • Soreness
  • Minor bleeding
  • Minor bruising

Potential side effects of acupressure

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Dangers of NAET

Several major medical associations listed below advise against the use of NAET.

  • National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
  • American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
  • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease
  • European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology

It could be very dangerous if you have a serious allergy to trust that NAET has eliminated that allergy. Especially, if you have what is known as anaphylaxis a life threatening reaction to an allergen. Coming into contact with that allergen again could result in death due to anaphylaxis.

In a case study of a man who was being treated by a NAET chiropractor for a peanut allergy died about 90 minutes after his appointment. The peanut allergy was found to be the cause of death.

Can you really eliminate allergies?

Living with allergies can be burdensome. Many patients with allergies that affect their activities of daily living can become stressed and ultimately depressed by the condition. Frustration over a lack of adequate treatment is a natural response.

Unfortunately, today there are no cures for allergies or allergic conditions. When things sound to good to be true they often are. If you are searching for ways to cope with your allergy symptoms, don’t fall into the false hope that NAET can cure you.

Talk to a doctor to ensure you are diagnosed accurately. Patients who claim NAET worked may have been misdiagnosed from the start. Muscle testing will not provide accurate allergy information. Eliminating problems that were never actually allergies are probably what these “cured” patients experience.

Should you believe what you see on the website?

Many questionable statements exist in Dr. Nambudripad’s website and book. Consequently, these are a few of the most troubling.

  • Muscle testing or using kinesiology to determine if a patient has an allergy is not related in any way to the immune globulins such as IgE that drive allergies in the human body.
  • NAET’s nutritional component encourages supplement use. However, practices such as holding a supplement in one hand and pulling on the other hand or arm, in no way can accurately allow a prescriber to dose those supplements.
  • Dr. Nambudripad claims to have lived on a diet of rice and broccoli for three years. There is no other reputable health information that would advise you follow such a drastic diet. You would quickly become deficient on other vitamins and nutrients not found in those two foods.
  • In her book, she claims to take 30 aspirin per day which would be an extreme overdose. The recommended maximum is 3.2 grams per day, and the dose she describes would be over three times above that. Prolonged use at those doses could cause serious side effects including death.

Another strange tidbit is you can sign up for a bimonthly newsletter about NAET, however, it comes with a subscription fee of $36.

NAET treatment at home?

Apparently, there have been spin offs of these processes by do it yourselfers. Yes, these are people who are trying to do the acupuncture, acupressure and possibly chiropractic techniques themselves!

Likewise, even the NAET website advises against this idea. If you want to undergo accupuncture, acupressure or chiropractic treatment please see a licensed professional. Ask them to do there normal services on you, if you and your doctor feel they would be appropriate. Stay away from NAET at home and in the clinics!

Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique for dogs?

Apparently some veterinarians have been promoting NAET for animals. They have coined the term holistic veterinary practices.

These practices are not suitable for humans by any major medical association. Therefore, a benefit in animals does not seem likely. There are no studies that prove safety or efficacy in animals.

If you have a pet who is suffering from allergies, have a conversation with your vet. See what they say before taking your pet to a NAET veterinarian.
